学术报告(Fran Allen)

报告题目:The Challenge of the Multicores

报告人:Fran Allen,IBM Fellow Emerita,IBM T.J.Watson Research Center
时    间:2010年10月18日上午10:00
地    点:科技馆二楼报告厅

Abstract:
Computers have traditionally used complex “cores” to manage and execute computations and, over the years, these computers have achieved ever increasing levels of performance. However fundamental limitations of size, heat and energy have emerged. To overcome these limitations simpler, cooler “multicores” that work in parallel are being used. But how will users and applications take advantage of the potential parallelism to deliver performance? This talk will review some of the history of languages and compilers for high performance systems and consider opportunities for performance on multicore systems. The talk is intended to encourage the exploration of new approaches.

报告题目:Two Journeys

报告人:Fran Allen,IBM Fellow Emerita,IBM T.J.Watson Research Center
时    间:2010年10月19日18:30
地    点:仙林校区图书馆一楼报告厅

Abstract:
This talk is about two Journeys related to computing.
The first Journey started in July 1973 when my husband, Jack Schwartz, and I were invited by China to visit computer science centers and to lecture on computer-related topics.  A trip report we wrote at the time includes some detailed observations about the status of computer hardware, programming, and theory at several institutions. My talk will describe the 1973 visit and will lead to some observations on how far computing and education have advanced in the intervening 37 years. There is much to celebrate.
The second Journey is about my career in computing and how high risk projects that fail can lead to success.  It is also a story of the evolution of some of the ideas that have shaped computers and Computer Science so far. We have much more to do.
I plan on leaving plenty of time for discussion about topics of interest to the audience.

Bio:Fran Allen is an IBM Fellow Emerita at the T. J. Watson Research Laboratory with a specialty in compilers and program optimization for high performance computers. This work led to Fran being named the recipient of ACM’s 2006 Turing Award “For pioneering contributions to the theory and practice of optimizing compiler techniques that laid the foundation for modern optimizing compilers and automatic parallel execution.” She has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Philosophical Society and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, ACM, IEEE, and the Computer History Museum.  Fran is an active mentor and is especially interested in encouraging women Computer Scientists. Fran first visited China in 1973 when she and husband Jack Schwartz were invited to lecture on computing. Since then she has made numerous visits, including a 1983 trip as part of a Chinese-American mountaineering expedition in western China. I look forward to my first visit to Nanjing!!
